Microsoft provides a peek into Longhorn along with launch of 64 bit Windows

Software giant Microsoft Corp showcased 64 bit windows on Monday in Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. In a keynote speech, Bill Gates, Chairman Microsoft Corp, announced availability of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server (TM) 2003 x64 Edition, both based on 64 bit. Gates also offered a peek into "Longhorn", the next operating system from Microsoft, which is slated to be launched in early 2006.

The new OS code-named as "Longhorn" is going to be built on 64 bit architecture and will focus on increased security and more computing power.

Gates said that Longhorn will change PC fundamentals and urged hardware manufactures to embrace some of the latest technological innovations taking place in PC technologies in order to provide a more natural PC experience. Some of the fundamental changes that will be ushered by Longhorn will be in the area of security, deployment and manageability.

Microsoft Corporation recently launched 15-month long advertising campaign "Start Something" to showcase its operating system Windows XP (which was launched almost 36 months back) in 11 countries worldwide including US & India. Meanwhile, Apple is expected to start shipping its OS named as "Tiger" on 29th April. With a price tag of $129 and more than 200 features, Tiger OS is expected to ride on the success of iPod. The launch of Tiger is keenly watched by both Mac enthusiasts as well as industry analysts in order to gauge its success and its ability to give some competition.
