iPod gets company from Nokia N91

April 27, 2005
(CoolAvenues News Wire)

In a bid to further expand its market, Nokia introduced its next generation multimedia device branded as N series on Wednesday. Armed with technologies such as 3G, Carl Zeiss Optics, megapixel cameras, multi-gigabyte memory, VHS resolution video and WLAN, the Nokia N series aims to expand its territory beyond mobile and aims to take it to the turf of music portable players.

Nokia aims to give competition to iPod by its N91, which can store almost 3000 songs and has all compelling features of a standard MP3 player. It serves up to 12.5 hours of great sound via the included stereo head-set with remote control, and supports a wide range of digital music formats including MP3, M4A, AAC and WMA. However, one feature that really sets it apart from all other MP3 players is availability of WCDMA, WLAN and Bluetooth wireless technology, which allows users to get the desired music at any place by buying directly from a desired music store on the air, which makes is really anywhere-device.

Further, the other compelling feature, which may go very well with the young market, is music share facility where users will be able to share their play-lists with friends by multimedia message, email or Bluetooth.

iPod, which enjoys near-fad following due to its huge storage capacity & sleek minimal size, seems to be facing first real competition from Nokia, as Nokia aims to become more of a multimedia company than to be a mobile maker. Moreover, given users' preference to carry one device, iPOd is going to face pressure from ever expanding features of Nokia where it aims to provide camera, digital music, email, calendar, and host of other features, and thus, serve all the needs by one product.

This launch is expected to put pressure on iPod sales, as users may like to buy one device rather than carrying out various devices like camera, mobile and MP3 player while on the move.

Concluded.
