Nokia N series makes further stride towards Convergence

April 29, 2005
(CoolAvenues News Wire)

By launching its next generation multimedia phones known as N-Series, Nokia is slowly moving towards a total convergence, and please note that Nokia is calling its latest gadgets not mobile phones but multimedia devices. The N series phones are expected to be available during the second quarter of 2005, followed by several more by the end of 2005.

These multimedia devices armed with technologies such as 3G (for a total multi media experience), Carl Zeiss optics (for a high-end camera experience through high quality lens), megapixel cameras, multi gigabyte memory (to store music and photos), VHS resolution video and WLAN & Bluetooth (to seamlessly access world wide web), Nokia multimedia phones have come a long way when they used to be just a talking instrument and aimed to replace your fixed landline, but today these gadgets are aiming to replace your MP3 player, camera, palmtop and are more near to a small computer than just a talking device.

Consumers can now use a single device to do everything from snapping print-quality images, reading email, listening to music, browsing their favorite websites, watching mobile TV and much more. "This next step in digital convergence brings together mobile devices, Internet content, still and video cameras, music, e-mail and much more. Nokia N series devices share similar design traits as mobile phones, but they are actually powerful pocket-able computers with a comprehensive set of multimedia features," said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Multimedia, Nokia.

While there is significant movement towards convergence where one device is going to provide consumers multiple features on accessing data and entertainment, much progress is not happening towards mobile commerce. However, analysts predict that in near future mobile device, apart from being a camera, music player, storage device and e-mail reader, will also become your single window to the financial world. In a future scenario, mobile phones can be used to access banks and do transactions and will replace credit/debit cards and will provide solutions for all micro-cash applications as well as for other variety of activities, such as booking movie-tickets or paying parking bills.

Hence, probably Nokia is not only going to tread on the territories of Cannons & Apples, but is also going to expand its war zone to the financial world and other service providers also.

Concluded.
