Yahoo Tech!: CNET Got Company

May 02, 2006

With a move to consolidate its position in branded banner advertising, Yahoo unveiled Yahoo Tech (http://tech.yahoo.com), a site for people interested in buying gadgets. This site will offer advise on technology products, user reviews and will try to simplify overall buying process involved with buying gadgets.

As per Internet watchers, the present move by Yahoo! is considerably a smart move as technology companies are the largest advertiser on net, and having a brand in tech driven by its all core groups, can help Yahoo to garner a sizeable share of this market. In recent times, Google by virtue of its contextual text ad technology, has given Yahoo a run for money in advertising space.

In Yahoo Tech, some of the content is going to be powered by PC World and PC Magazine while user-reviews and the question and answer content will be sourced from Yahoo Answers (a free service where people ask and get replies to their queries by fellow surfers and real people), further Yahoo Tech!

At present, CNET is the leader in this space and offers visitors editorials as well as user-reviews on tech gadgets. In the last quarter ending March 2006, CNET Networks reported a total revenue for the first quarter equaled $83.4 million, a 17 percent increase compared to revenues of $71.2 million for the same period of 2005. Further, CNET networks attracted some 116.8 million unique monthly users on all its properties. However, going forward, it will face tremendous challenge as Yahoo, on the back of its vast traffic and support from other properties, is going to be a real dominant force in this market.

Concluded.
