Amity fined over AICTE status

Amity Business School has been fined Rs 1.10 lakh by a Delhi based Consumer court as compensation to a student for misleading her on the status of AICTE approval. AMITY told the students that its course was recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), though AICTE has already withdrawn recognizition to Amity Business School.

“The candidate should be adequately compensated for mental agony for having spent a few years in obtaining the degree, which was falsely represented to be recognised by a government authority,” the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission said in its order.

The order came on an appeal filed by Gunvinder Kaur Bhatia, who did a postgraduate diploma in International Business Programme in the Noida-based Amity, asking for enhancement of the Rs one lakh compensation amount awarded by a District Consumer Forum.

This ruling has come on the heel of another ruling where MRTPC asked SPJIMR to refund fee to a student and fined SPJIMR for indulging in unfair trade practices.

These two cases are bound to create ethical issues in India as what ethical values this schools will impart on students when they themselves are found to be guilty of unethical behaviour. There has been renewed focus on ethics in Business in USA in view of recent corporate scanadals and US B-Schools has revised their curriculum to impart teaching on ethical issues so that future MBAs are critically aware of ethics but in India it seems to be different story where B-School are fined for unethical business practices

AICTE or non-AICTE does not make much of a difference as long as the quality of education is great. Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and Times School of Marketing, New Delhi are non AICTE recognised b-schools and still they do much better than many small and ill-equipped business schools which have AICTE approval.
In the present case there could have been an error on understanding since Amity’s course was AICTE approved but was withdrawn at a stage when students had been admitted.
This is the fault of the government that they should complete the approval process before the selection lists of the b-schools is out.

It s true that some of the institutes which do not have the AICTE approval are doing better than some of those who do have but that doesn’t mean that you mislead students regarding your approval status. we need to have a well defined policy in place to address these kind of issues especially management education becoming the most sought after these days

AICTE approval does mean a lot if the institute has not got an excellent reputation in the field of management studies.
