Editors Note : In view of full details being available, it is understood that OBC quota might take some more time to come in force. In a major judgment, The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld reservation for Other Backward Class (OBC) category in all government-funded higher educational institutes while delivering its verdict on the implementation of 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in premier institutes of higher education.
49. 5 percent of the seats in higher educational institutes would be reserved. The Schedule Castes (SCs) and Schedule Tribes (STs) enjoy a 22.5 per cent reservation. While the SCs have 15 per cent reservation, for the STs it is 7.5 per cent.
This judgment might impact will impact IIMs and other Govt funded / aided institutes and will not impact ISB Hyderabad, SPJIMR Mumbai and other private institutes as the Bench said nothing whether the reservation will be applicable for private institutes. The question was not raised before SC and so the issue wasn’t touched at all.
Hence it will be interesting to note as how IIMs and ISB will evolve in a longer time frame as far as overall quality of Institutes are concerned.

Certainly this is a sad day for all of us. India no longer deserves our brain. I wish we could find a better place. This is pathetic to see country’s biggest judicial body is being dictated by the legislative authorities.
It is not the case that we let this happen. If we say this then we are forgetting the efforts people put last year and at the time of Mondal Aayog. They died for such things not to happen. But politicians like these have gone mad. Really i feel distressed when i realize the fact that i am being ruled by such politicians.
This is a terrible outcome .. seems like we sold our soul for vote bank politics. We have no right to complain about brain drain now. Might even lead to rotting of potential..not being sc/st doesn’t mean you’re rolling in wealth.

If the govt. wants that let them implement and thwey should reduce the quota evry year 1% and the same can be given to ecenamicely poor persons in other f.cs. r they ready to do that. then we can think about that.

The Supreme Court made a fair judgment. After all the years of suppression and exploitation at the hands of the Upper Class, it is only fair that kids of the lower classes have some kind of opportunity to better themselves, financially as well as intellectually. These few seats is the only way we can help them better themselves and it still does not make up for the centuries of oppression.

any facts to say that there has been some centuries of oppression…u ppl say this just to get this reservation forever to make sure that all ur next generations benefit from this economically no matter whether u r rich or poor…you ppl know for sure that u can never withstand the competition especially with the OC’s and u ppl feel that this reservation will help u in sustaining the competition…if u have guts get a seat under OC category…there is nothing great to get a seat evn if it is an iim-a if u get it thru some reservation…if i were to have reservation i wud probably read the subject much more confidently as i will be having this reservation backing me and i wud definetly get a seat in some premier institutions without having to compete against the tougher OC’s….these obc’s will always remain backward whether it is in their way of thinking or their greediness…the way they try to hog the seats…very very dirty ppl in fact…also nothing that we can do…we should never throw stones on buffalos dung(very much dirty)….just a small suggestion to all OC’s ….leave india and get in to top universities where the obc’s can never ever think of getting into(no reservations abroad hahaha) even in ther farthest dreams….how many obc’s can make it to stanford,harward,mit…ahh?…no one…its impossible for them to get it without reservation…comeon obc’s its time for u to fight fot the reservation in those institutes as well and get down their educational level as well….previously iit’s were in top 100 globally…now it is ranked 350+…and it will only increase ..and why not…as the reservation increases the level should also decrease….fucking obc’s….always backward…they also want that backwardness or to be called backward to get this reservation….only god can help the future of the top indian institutes….i am going abroad….

Those who are against reservation let me ask a simple question do u have any idea about population distribution among different casts census 2001.
Let me give u a littli insight abt it
ST 8.2%
SC 16.2%
Do u know what does it indicate
It simply means that out of 100 indians 16+ are SC and 8+ are ST.
Now coming to pt of reservation.
For the time being let us reject the pt that they are suppressed and exploited.
The reservation KOTA for SC is 15 % and for ST it is 7.5%,which is I think a little less then their population share(24%+) in India.
This also makes it very clear that non SC,ST population is only 76% in india but thy are enjoying 77.5 % of reservation which can fairly be considered as unfair.
Now let us deal with problem of deteriorating educational standard in india due to reservation.
Let us make a legitimate assumption that real intelligent is independent of cast religion and sex.
Now taka an example of a city eith population of 1000 out of which 240 are SC +ST and 760 are Others
Out of 760 some guys are real intelligent and some are comparativeely less intelligent.
Same can be assumed for Other group
Suppose there are 100 vacancies for IIMs
If any thing more than 76 is selected for admission from General class then 77th,78th,79th……. guys must be less intelligent then 1st to 76th and they must be less intelligent than top 24 guys of SC+ST group.(uniform distribution of intelligence across cast)
That means without reservation we are giving opportunity to less intelligent guys and abating the standard of our prime institutes………..
Those who want to leave India are not able to face challenge posed by guys of there own class(higher class),and if U cant face challenge then better to run away.

mr.vijay grm the above column u r just prooving that backward castes are foolish and illogical.i let u know that general seats are subjected to decrease.if an sc/st getting higher marks comparable 2 the general then he got automatically selected & general seats got decreased.there is no general quota.as far as ur above example is concerned,what if 85 student of general
is much more talented than sc/st, only 76(u had not taken the obc quota) will be selected & rest 9 seats will be given 2 less talented sc/st.

kiran said that OBC or SCs can never think of competing with the OCs ….its totally wrong…The fact is that U people get enough opportunity to study in a reputed school and also to have training in good coaching centres and also from your dad or mom who are establish and highly educated , which the OBC SC ST etc cannot afford….so u people get that advantage of good training for the competition…there are a lot of SC ST candidates also who dont require reservation because they got the proper training to increase his merit..Nobody is born with merit..it has to be achieved …So dont think that u are Born Meritorius if you are an OC.

this is a excelent policy to give reservation for st/sc/obc bcoz normally these classes are backward and they didnt get any incentive for their mental and economical development so if they get reserved seats it will helpful for their higher development and can also prove as a boon to remove social enequality
To all those who are SUPPORTING the reservation saying that the backward class should get some benefit, please go to your colleges and see the students who have come through quotas. I assure you many will have “well-established” parents who are financially well-off. And they have never been oppressed in their lives.
The reservation is meant for economically backward people but they never get it because the SC/ST/OBC who dont require any financial help (at all) get it. They get low marks (much lower than other deserving students) but still get admission in the best colleges of the country.
