IIMs experiment with technology has gone sour due to computer snag hitting the online conduct of CAT 2009 exam. As per media reports, an unspecified number of centers in six cities reported computer crash. The centers have asked students to book another time slot. The server crashed soon after the CAT examination began in Chennai, Kolkata, Bhopal, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune, affecting large number students.

Online CAT examination was IIMs first attempt to shift paper pencil exam to computer based testing and follow the GMAT exam pattern. Earlier IIMs have awarded the tender to an American company ProMetric for conduct of online exams.

CAT is one of the toughest exam in the world where more than 2.5 lakh students vie with each other to gain entry into IIMs which have less than 1500 seats.

For last 3-4 years CAT exam has always been dogged by controversies including paper leakage, server collapse, reservation etc.

CAT scores determine entry to the IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode and Shillong and host of other institutes which accept CAT score for admission to their Management Programmes.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its Mid-Term Review of Annual Policy Statement for the Year 2007-08 wiped out any hopes of interest rate easing in the near future, as it hiked Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) i.e. the amount of money banks must hold in cash, by 0.5 per cent to 7.5% to suck out liquidity despite inflation at a five-year low. Good point about the CRR hike that it will stabilize liquidity and further hike in interest rates is unlikely.

We can see this hike by linking the same as a means of liquidity management rather than a signal to check inflation. This move is expected to suck additional liquidity to the extent of Rs. 15,000 Crore from the banking system. This policy echoes concerns raised by Government of India on massive capital flows into the country, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its policy document said managing the inflow, related liquidity implications and overall stability were the biggest challenges of monetary policy. Today, in India, we face a problem of enormous capital flows. This is a completely new situation for us. Capital is welcomed but we must learn how to manage capital, how to absorb capital. Read further at this link

Though this news does not come in our domain but probably it reminds us that behind a rocking 8% GDP growth, booming Sensex and rocking placements season, India is still a country where poor have very little choices and they are a second grade unwarranted and unnoticed citizens and all saga of growth and glory is limited to English speaking urban middle class.

The very fact that for last one year kidnapping of children were happening but let alone investigating, state police chose to ignore and look other way while poor relative of victims ran from pillar to post. It also remind that despite independence some 50 years back, India is still a country of ruling class and common man where all police, bureaucrats and politicians have replaced English and have continued the rule with very little empathy for the common man.

The only silver line in this all affair is media which has been coming out in full force and trying to get justice in some cases at least.

And what is probably more shameful that when this ghastly event came to light today it looked like that police is issuing statements to help accused rather than carrying out a detailed investigation. And hence probbaly we are no good than a banana republic when it comes to state of police and administration.
Some of example statements

IG Police statement to TV : I am not a inspector to know facts, I am IG Merrut Range, I am not a Inspector of police station who will know facts of case

Police : The accused is mentally unstable ( this without any medical examination and probably will help accused to evade strict punishment as lawyers will use statement of mentally unstable to secure release)

Police : The kids have been sexually assaulted ( again all police discovered was skulls and bones and no forensic examination was done, but confession statement was touted as gospel truth)

Probably all this also reminds that a cabinet minister is more worried about a game than some 1000 suicides and farmers are turned landless on the name of industrialization and SEZ. But Sensex is rising, middle class is celebrating and India is shining!

Do we need to say “Happy new year…. Probably and so please send your sms to …

N Sunil Kumar, a student of XLRI’s one year MBA program (GMP 2006-07) has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of ABN AMRO Foundation. Sunil who was earlier working with NABARD, plans to leverage his vast experience and the micro-finance skills learnt during the MBA program in his new assignment to manage projects that enhance income generation by providing structure and/or financial capital to enable communities, organizations and institutions to earn a sustainable living.

This appointment has created a lot of firsts in the BSchool segment: For any student of any BSchool in India, this is the first placement as a CEO and although the salary figure stands undisclosed but there are rumours at the XLRI campus says that it is one of the highest so far from any B-school student. Also, it is the first placement of the 55 member strong GMP Batch of 2006-07 of XLRI.

Sunil has rich industry experience of over 19 years working with NABARD in various branches in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bhubaneshwar. He was an AGM in NABARD at the time he joined GMP programme this June.

The interview process for the post of the CEO happened in Mumbai and lasted several rounds. In the end it was Sunil’s relevant industry knowledge and experience and his GMP education that settled the matter in his favour. In Sunil’s words, “The industry has a very good perception about one year programmes and the industry has started looking for people with the profiles and expertise that one-year B-school programmes are offering”.

The ABN AMRO Foundation was set up in December 2005 as part of the bank’s commitment to foster sustainable development.

XLRI’s 1 year GMP program is an accelerated program which caters to the ever growing demand for business leaders who are well equipped to be operational from day one. It has been designed for people with the urge to expand their knowledge and experience, thereby enabling them to shoulder greater responsibilites as they move up in the corporate hierarchy.

In a significant development, Microsoft Corp. today announced the release from beta of Live Search and of Live.com in 47 markets worldwide, and final availability of Live Local Search in the U.K. and the U.S. Microsoft also announced that Live Search will now power the Web search capability on MSN®, the company’s media and entertainment portal, attracting more than 465 million unique users worldwide per month.

The launch of Live services from beta shows significant commitment from Microsoft towards web business and its increasing resolve to fight back. Microsoft which acquired hotmail in hey days of dotcom era did not do much with it and left it without any significant improvement which resulted hotmail loosing market share to later entrants like Yahoo and Gmail from Google. Gmail from Google though still in beta is one of the fasted growing email services and revolutionized email services world by having a very simple interface with compelling features backed by an ever increasing email box of 2 GB and counting.

Moreover despite repetitive claims by Microsoft, its flagship msn brand has been losing market share in search business, where msn search share dropped to 11% from 14% while Google & Yahoo grew 41% and 47%. (See MSN Lags Behind in War of Search While Google & Yahoo Outpace the Search Industry Growth (http://news.coolavenues.com/0604251.php)

However with the launch of Windows Live, attention is bound to go back to Microsoft and Google where both seems to be attacking others’ turf with increasing intensity ( latest from Google was a web based spreadsheet available at spreadsheet.google.com, which aimed ad Ms Excel). However it is important to note that in its history Microsoft has never lost a single corporate battle, be it desktop, Operating systems, browser war or servers despite a growing tribe of Open source advocate or Microsoft haters. Despite great hype over latest browser war, Internet Explorer despite its security flaws, lack of multi tab browsing and all other ills, still commands more than 86% of the market and wide deployment of linux desktop still remains a pipe dream. Hence it will be interesting to see the developing scenario and see how Google responds to the latest challenge by a seasoned warlord who has waged many such wars and have always emerged as a winner.

Shares of Google at NASDAQ were up 1.5% while Microsoft was down by 0.35%.
