IIMs experiment with technology has gone sour due to computer snag hitting the online conduct of CAT 2009 exam. As per media reports, an unspecified number of centers in six cities reported computer crash. The centers have asked students to book another time slot. The server crashed soon after the CAT examination began in Chennai, Kolkata, Bhopal, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune, affecting large number students.

Online CAT examination was IIMs first attempt to shift paper pencil exam to computer based testing and follow the GMAT exam pattern. Earlier IIMs have awarded the tender to an American company ProMetric for conduct of online exams.

CAT is one of the toughest exam in the world where more than 2.5 lakh students vie with each other to gain entry into IIMs which have less than 1500 seats.

For last 3-4 years CAT exam has always been dogged by controversies including paper leakage, server collapse, reservation etc.

CAT scores determine entry to the IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode and Shillong and host of other institutes which accept CAT score for admission to their Management Programmes.

In a major judgment, The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld reservation for Other Backward Class (OBC) category in all government-funded higher educational institutes while delivering its verdict on the implementation of 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in premier institutes of higher education.

While the SCs have 15 per cent reservation, for the STs it is 7.5 per cent.

This judgment might impact <strike>will impact </strike>IIMs and other Govt funded / aided institutes and will not impact ISB Hyderabad, SPJIMR Mumbai and other private institutes as the Bench said nothing whether the reservation will be applicable for private institutes. The question was not raised before SC and so the issue wasn’t touched at all.

Each year, the Common Admission Test (CAT) is conducted jointly by the six IIMs. However, each IIM follows its own admission process, independent of the other IIMs. The IIM to which the candidate has applied, evaluates the candidate in each of a set of different areas of achievement, including CAT Scores. Besides IIMs, various other top business institutions of the country also use CAT Scores as one of the eligibility criteria for admission to their management programmes.

MBA aspirants can access their results on the Internet or via SMS. CAT Scores for individual applicants can be accessed on the CAT website www.catiim.in on the 8th of January from <st1:time minute="0" hour="15">3:00 PM</st1:time> onwards. The scores can be accessed by keying in the Test Registration Number and either the Date of Birth (preferred) or the CAT Application Number. The IIMs that have short listed the candidate for Group Discussion and Personal Interviews (if so) will also be displayed automatically. Of all the applications received, around 7,000 forms were rejected for various errors. CAT 2007 was held in 23 cities across the country.

However, unlike last year, this year’s exam passed without any glitch or major surprises, as in last year there was significant controversy over certain wrong questions as well as the pattern of paper.

CAT is undoubtedly not only the toughest exam to crack (given the large number of aspirants), but also one of the most unpredictable exam as there is neither any set pattern nor any certain difficulty level, though every year students as well as CAT coaching centers devote quite a significant amount of energy on predicting the CAT pattern without any success.

In the CAT 2007 paper, there were overall 75 questions – 25 each in the sections of mathematics, language and data interpretation. In CAT 2003, there were 150 questions, which got reduced to 123 in 2004, 90 in 2005. In 2006, the number of questions stood at 75.

The results of CAT 2007 are expected to be announced in Dec 2007.
